Kas
The attractive town of Kas is perched on a hill
overlooking the Mediterranean. The narrow streets of this old fishing
village are lined with great restaurants, tea gardens, old greek
and ottoman houses and ancient Lycian artifacts. Kas is conveniently
located for road and boat excursions to interesting spots such as
Saklikent Gorge, Kekova Island and of course the seemingly endless
Patara Beach. The restaurants
here offer good quality
food and the panoramic views that many have to offer
are second to none.
Kekova
Now an island, Kekova was once joined to the mainland but it suffered
a series of earthquakes and these geological influences rendered
it a city six metres below the sea.
Patara
Beach
Patara is the setting
for one of the most extraordinary beaches in Turkey. Some 20km
long with an average width of 50 metres, the beach here boasts
dramatic dunes formed from silky soft sand. To the rear there
is a pine forest whist on the beach itself you can see Oleander
trees. The remains of the ancient city engage in an ongoing battle
with the sand, some are covered by dunes, whilst others have
slipped beneath a swampy lake, formerly the ancient harbour.
However, the theatre and original gateway to the city are still
in good order. Patara is also the birthplace of St Nicolas, the
4th century bishop who became better known as Santa Claus.
Kaputas
Beach
A beautifully secluded sandy bay at the foot of a deep ravine. The beach is excellent
but access is via steps, quite a lot of steps!
Optional Activities and Adventures
Journey Anatolia is
proud to bring you some of the most exciting adventures in
Lycian Turkey. Based in Kas and set amidst dramatic scenery;
off the beaten track villages, waterfalls, canyons and forests,
these activities are high adrenaline, tons of fun and don't
require previous experience. A regular fitness level and a
keen sense of adventure is all you need.
We offer sea-kayaking,
canyoning, mountain-biking, paragliding and scuba diving to
name just a few! All with professional instructors,
support teams and using the latest equipment.
Sea
Kayaking
The exciting alternative way to explore the famous Kekova region.
Paddle over the Sunken City at your own pace. This area is off-limits
to swimmers and divers so kayaking is the closest you can get
to the underwater foundations, walls and mosaics dating back
2000 years. We often disembark at the village of Simena, inaccessible
by road and surmounted by a castle with brilliant panoramic view.
Jeep Safaris and Trekking
The Mountains behind Kas are some of the most beautiful anywhere
in the Taurus. Below the tree line & winter snow are the yayla
(highland plateaux.) Falling away from them; canyons, gorges and
passes, down which in spring the melting snow rushes.
The scenery is dramatic: extensive pine and cedar forest, outcrops
of juniper and plane are topped by the impressive Ak Mountains; snowcapped
until July, thereafter turning a light red until the Autumn snow.
Whether your interests be in the steps of forgotten civilisations,
the geography and nature of a beautiful land or the attraction of
unspoiled village life you will love walking and exploring in Lycian
Turkey.
Paragliding
Experience the thrill of flying over beautiful coastal scenery. Launching
from the mountain behind Kas (1000m), the descent takes around
30 minutes. This is a true "bird's eye" view of the old
town of Kas, its harbour, the peninsula and the Greek island of
Castellorize.
Tandem paragliding leaves you free to enjoy the experience and leaves
the technicalities of flying in the hands of a friendly and professional
pilot.
Scuba
Diving
Whether a pleasure dive or a PADI qualification course, Kas is
one of the best dive spots in Mediterranean Turkey with great
instructors and facilities.
Mountain Bike Adventures
Our routes are a mixture of little used asphalt roads and backwater tracks. The
scenery is spectacular, mountain valleys, streams, canyons, unknown ancient
cities and authentic mountain villages. Our one-day descents usually come from
the mountains back to stunning views of the Mediterranean coast. An exhilarating
day out, and mostly downhill.
Canyon
Walking
Abseiling waterfalls, jumping into clear pools of water, at times
swimming through narrow passages, climbing boulders and walking
through spectacular natural environments. All you need is a head
for heights, the ability to swim and an appetite for adventure.
Descents are made with wet suits and waterproof packs. Some descents
require ropes and harnesses. We conform to international standards
of safety and use only the best equipment. The canyons are all local
and include the magnificent Saklikent gorge. |
