Driving Times
Turkey is a big country but with slow moving roads. So some drives
are long but with regular breaks for refreshments and to admire
the scenery. On longer routes we try to leave as early as possible
in order to arrive at the next location with time to enjoy. These
drives are all part of the adventure, roads have charm of their
own and often surprise you with magical moments.
Changing Money
Banks and ATM machines are abundant in Turkey and many places accept
credit cards.
Clothing
As a general guide, bring light clothing that is easy to wash.
Something warm for cool evenings and crossing high altitudes.
A decent fleece is invaluable. It is worth considering that in
some parts of Turkey the attitude to dress is conservative especially
in the East. Also it is not good etiquette to wear shorts when
visiting mosques, additionally, women cover their heads and men
wear long sleeves. At other times, in particular by the coast,
you may dress casually.
The Art of the Haggle
In Turkey, haggling is a major part of the shopping experience,
in most cases it is relaxed and can be great fun, shopkeepers
are usually friendly and will try to make you feel at home with
offerings of tea.
Safety
Turkey is a relatively safe country, in most places travellers
can
comfortably wonder alone night and day. In the big cities, like
Istanbul, try to exercise a little more caution. Do not carry valuables
as pickpockets operate near the bazaars. On the whole Turkish society
frowns on disrespectable behaviour, and should you get any serious
hassle passers by will often come to your aid.
Tour Leaders & Guides
Journey Anatolia tour leaders are not only there to ensure your
trip runs smoothly but also to share their knowledge and passion
for Turkey with you. They can advise you on how to spend your
free time, offer advice on food and shopping etc. Please show
understanding if at any time things don’t go according
to plan.
Photography
Most people do not mind too much if you want to photograph them,
but please do ask and respect the wishes of those who are not
comfortable with it. Film and camera shops are readily available
everywhere.
Internet
Cyber cafes are springing up across the country, there will be
many opportunities to check your email.
Travel Insurance
We advise you to purchase a full travel insurance covering cancellations,
health, lost baggage, accident and personal effects. We do not
assume responsibility for damage or loss of any personal effects.
Visa
Visas for Turkey are usually available on arrival. For the latest
information on cost contact your nearest Turkish Embassy or consulate.
